Kelgorath should return as a Dire Taken
I found it very weird Kelgorath didn’t return at all in Heresy as he is like the perfect embodiment of the Dire Taken. Putting memes aside Kelgorath is quite capable prior to encountering us, having killed a Guardian and a Techeun (who collapsed an ascendant plane to kill him in one instance) by adapting through death, and killed a rival knight serving Savathun. He also has served all three Hive Gods at one point or another, originally serving Oryx through Crota, then Savathun, then declaring Savathun a heretic and following Xivu were he became a Wrathborn though seemed to keep a lot of his independence.
Kelgorath continues to adapt and grow in power to match our guardian but the Witness doesn’t see the progress made but only the failures and reduces Kelgorath to a vestige of his own failures rather than the embodiment of his progress against the guardian. In Final Shape we see Kelgorath at his lowest so it’s surprising, considering the Dire Taken seen to recruit based on desperation and dire situations, that we didn’t see Kelgorath join their fold in Heresy.
I think the guardian having a recurring enemy like Kelgorath is interesting, it’s nice to see the individual impact we have on enemies and Kelgorath is able to easily present that through his abilities of coming back from death. Kelgorath has quite a bit of lore and build up to just have this sad send off, I think it would be very interesting to see him continue to adapt against us.
Also as a side thought I think if he does become a Dire taken it would be cool if he was a taken version of his Darkblade self, maybe a Direblade? A Taken Darkblade that pulls people closer with strand and freezes them with a stasis ax seems like a good next step adaptation alongside any other usual tricks and mechanics.
What are your guys’ thoughts on Kelgorath, should we see his return and continuation of his evolution or would it be better if his recurring appearances ended in Final Shape to allow new enemies among the Dire Taken to take the spotlight?
