Parents who host adult kids and grandkids — what would you want in a dedicated guest apartment?
My parents are planning to build a self-contained apartment above their garage specifically for hosting their adult children, pets and (eventual) grandkids. The space will likely be a single large open room (studio-style), potentially sleeping 3–4 people at a time.
They have a working wish list, but I'm hoping this community can help me add to it — my brother and I will be the primary users of the space, and the hope is that it will work well for young families as we (hopefully) have kids in the coming years. What actually makes a space like this comfortable, functional, and worth coming back to? Looking for anything from specific features and items to layout suggestions that I can bring to them. What would you consider essential?
Planned:
- Full bathroom with shower
- Built-ins/cabinetry for books, games, etc.
- Queen bed + additional sleeping (bunk beds, 2 singles, or sleeper sofas — TBD)
- Seating for 4–6
Wish list:
- Tub in the bathroom
