why am i exhausted all day then suddenly wide awake when it’s time to sleep

this has been happening to me way too often lately. i’ll spend the whole afternoon feeling like i could fall asleep anywhere, then once i finally get in bed my brain decides it’s time to be awake. i’m not even doing anything interesting. i’ll just lie there thinking about random stuff or checking the time and getting annoyed that i’m still awake. then the next morning i feel terrible and tell myself i’m definitely sleeping early that night, only for the same thing to happen again.

has anyone actually managed to break this cycle? what helped you get sleepy at the time you actually wanted to sleep?
