Why do brands say “canvas” like it’s a material?

I realised I don’t actually understand what “canvas” means in handbags.

I always thought canvas was a specific material, but apparently it can be cotton, linen, polyester, coated, uncoated, etc. Yet brands often just say “coated canvas” without explaining further.

Canvas itself seems more like a construction/fabric category than an actual material.

So when brands say things like “coated canvas,” what is it usually made of in practice?
And why don’t brands disclose the underlying material more clearly?
