Tamawashi

A few of you saw my previous post (a modest 29k) about our little runt Russell passing away on 4/30. Well the following weeks were an absolute gut wrenching time as most of the litter passed as well. We suspect wet tail, stress and maybe bad genetics (unplanned pet store babies). But it all happened so quickly once signs were showing that nothing seemed to help. Out of 9 lil hammy beans we are down to one super tough guy named Tamawashi (named after an equally as tough Sumo wrestler by the same name).
So I wanted to update and show off some pictures of this cutie patootie! And mommy Mochi photo tax because she’s always looking confused and cute as can be. We love Tamawashi so much and he seems to be enjoying getting to burrow and eat all the food by himself. Thankfully not showing any signs of sickness! He will be 6 weeks old on Wednesday!! 🙏

In memorial here are the names we chose for the others and when the lil beans passed.

My grandparents property has a lot of natural growing orchard grass! Could I add these fresh sprays in to my hammys cage for her to eat and use as decor? As long as I freeze/dry them to ensure they have no bugs!

As some of you may remember our Mochi girl came home to us about 3 weeks ago, then the very next day she had a litter of nine pups. She’s been an absolute amazing mama. She’s so protective and caring for all of her babies. But she did have a runt, we named him Russell. Russell’s only about half the size of his siblings, but is so full of adventure. Just 2 days ago he came out to eat some of his favorite treats, broccoli. While out he was running around and following his siblings around the cage. He was so wobbly and frail previously, so this was a huge feat. Once I knew he was eating on his own I’d make sure to give him private buffets on my hand, so he wasn’t fighting for his food. He had become so much stronger and quicker. He would walk right onto my fingers and let me pick him up for some pets and tasty food.

Sadly last night we found Russell no longer with us. Mama Mochi had placed him in his favorite spot and covered him with bedding. I checked on them before bed as I always do and noticed he wasn’t moving. When we removed their hide she quickly panicked and grabbed him. She wasn’t ready to let him go either. We buried him in a little box, filled with some bedding, tiny pieces of broccoli and placed him to rest in our flowerbed. He will be loved forever and always missed. Our strong adventurous boy. 😭💙
