My friends hamster died and they adopted a new one. Unfortunately the daughter hates her because of the colour and absolutely refused to enter her room again, screaming she hated her. So, now she found her way into my possession.
I have had rats and mice for years but I had never anything to do with hamsters. The only thing I know is that they shouldn't have fruit because they get diabetes (?).
Can someone tell me everything I need to know and also the difference in behaviour between hamsters and rats?
Thank you

I started off with a tiny pet store cage and this is where my cage is at 1 year later! The cage is quite long so I feel like it’s really hard getting it cluttered, my hamster is a happy hammy and that’s what makes me happy ❤️
He doesn’t ever stop showing them off, please help
does this warrant a vet visit or will he be ok if i treat him at home? i can afford the vet visit, it’s just logistics of getting him there + i don’t want to cause any unnecessary stress for him if the vet visit isn’t necessary. i know with humans they will send you home with a couple bandages and maybe an antibiotic, but we are much more resilient than these little ones. i don’t need medical advice, just wondering if it’s necessary to take him for this. i will be trying to clean it with a q-tip dipped in chlorhexidine solution when he allows it
I’m having hampter fever and I wanna see all the colours and patterns out there.
So leave a comment with your hampter 🫶🏻 I’ll start with mine (Kylie)
So, my first hamster marshmellow was a roboroski! I had been begging my parents for a hamster for forever and they said they chose the fattest one so she wouldn't run away (she really was rather round hehe)
Anyways for being a robo she was very very chill with being held and never bit my prying 1st /2nd grade hands
!!Please keep in mind 2nd grade me did NOT choose these enclosure and didn't like it then either (was a hopping hammy lover heheh i miss that channel)!!
But yeah I miss her she was sweet, very good first experience!
Hold your hammies tight everyone, you are their entire world. 🐹❤️
Hello all,
First time Syrian hamster owner here in the UK. We brought Jelly home yesterday and I just want some experienced advice on his new home.
We have researched to no end tried to make the best home possible for him.
Thanks all in advance 🙂
Josh
Over the last 3 years, I've lost 2 syrian hamsters prematurely. But most recently, I had my biggest tragedy yet. My newly adopted long haired syrian hamster Marzipan just passed away 3 weeks after adoption. I had noticed some discharge a few days after adoption, but concluded it was typical female discharge. I was looking at her every day for any symptoms as i was also concerned about wet tail.
Well yesterday i got back from work, and found her crouched in a corner, stiff. When i picked her up i noticed a large amount of clumped blood stuck to her rear end. I have several other hamsters I owned living 2 years plus. But the syrians especially seem prone to dying young.
My questions
Are health problems like pyometra, UTI, or wet tail made worse by poor hamster breeding?
Does anyone else notice if theres less health complications with dwarf hamsters?
An aside, I wish there were ethical breeders by me! I hate supporting the breeders that do not track the outcome of their health. Im in minneapolis, and the closest I've found was in virginia, or maybe chicago.
EDIT: to be clear, I dont breed myself. I only adopt.
I’m barley have a grip on him, hence him completely melting in my fingers😆 I just want to make sure it’s alright to hold him like this since it’s literally the only way he likes to be held.
PS: sorry for flashing his balls😓for a little guy they pretty much flash you constantly
Hello,
My friend recently passed away near the Sacramento-Davis area from a s**c**e. He had a pet hamster he cared for a couple months and passed away. I’m not sure how to take care of him. If anyone is looking for a hamster please let me know. I do not know how to care for him. I tried reaching out to shelters and have not heard back from them. If you have experience with hamsters please and a mode of transportation, please let me know. DM me and I will send pictures and the address if you are serious and are knowledgeable about hamster care.
He will come with his whole enclosure which is a bit too small for him unfortunately (20 gallons). I can provide the food that my friend used for him as well and the remaining bedding I have from my friends room.
Very sorry if this is a depressing post.
Thank you.
Best,
