I went to a friends wedding last weekend and was reminded how off putting the idea of marriage feels to me. I don’t want to be tied to someone so permanently and I don’t want a man involved in my finances. But the idea of a wedding registry is almost enough to make me do it. It doesn’t feel fair that friends get so much money and gifts for what doesn’t feel like a particular accomplishment. I have done things I am so proud of (got a PhD! Ran a 2:42 marathon!). Those are my “weddings.” But people don’t treat them the same way even though to me they are my greatest accomplishments and the things I most want celebrated.
