England and Scotland
Two adults, two seniors, one adventurous and easy going toddler (3). One Harry Potter inspired trip. What could go wrong?!
Booked: flight to LHR, accomodations at a tiny bed and breakfast in Pimlico for 5 nights. Plan to train it to Edinburgh on 8/30 (hopefully meet the end of Fringe chaos?). Prefer not to stay in multiple cities in Scotland but totally can if needed. I'd love to see any of these: Edinburgh, Glasgow (loose family ties are here), Inverness/Highlands, Jacobite steam train (watch, not ride). We are okay renting a car if needed for any of these, as my parents will likely need to rent one at some point anyway to see friends. But public transit is my preference.
I'd like to stay in a castle hotel because why not. I'd like to hit the HP highlights in Edinburgh, day trip to Glasgow, day trip to the Highlands, etc.
We have a soft exit date of 9/2 or 9/3 depending on what y'all suggest (haven't booked return trip yet) - how many days do we need to do some (or all?) of these things in Scotland without stressing ourselves out or spending all our time in cars or cabs? Are there castle hotels worthy of staying in that still allow for city exploration? Or are most of them too far out of the way to really enjoy both the hotel and adventures?
