How do I tell my PI I can't attend a conference?

Hi everyone,

I just need a minute to vent and cry about something that happened today. I was supposed to go to a conference at the end of October, and I thought I had registered in early September. When I went back today to pay the registration fee, it said I wasn’t registered. I emailed the conference coordinators, and they said the meeting is oversubscribed and there’s nothing they can do.

I checked my browser history and found the link from early September. When I opened it, the page said, “Your registration could not be processed,” and in smaller words it said that the first-name field had been left blank. I guess I never noticed that it didn't go through and now I feel absolutely terrible. This is a really important conference that my PI wanted me to attend.

I waited to pay the fee because it wasn't due until October 17th and my school was going to cover it. My stomach is to my ass right now because I have no idea how I’m going to tell my PI.

Have any of you made a mistake like this? If so, what did you guys do to try and fix it?

Telling my doctor about my anxiety

Hi Reddit,
I have a doctor's appointment today and I'm planning to bring up my anxiety for the first time. I've dealt with it since high school, but it's gotten worse since starting uni.
My anxiety isn't constant. It mainly happens during periods of academic stress, like when I have finals or presentations. During those times, I get so anxious that I can't eat and end up throwing up repeatedly. Recently, it was so bad I couldn’t even stomach water. This is why I want to ask my doctor about some potential treatment options, especially for my severe nausea. But, I feel like my anxiety isn't as severe as other people's, so I’m not sure if I should even bring this up to my doctor.

Have any of you had a similar experience to this?

Professor invited me to coauthor a paper, but I think my friend deserves the opportunity more

Hi Reddit,
I'm in a bit of a dilemma. A professor recently asked if I'd like to help write a research paper based on a project from one of my biology classes. The project was done by the entire class, but we worked in small groups and each group submitted their own lab report. I'm currently working with this professor in a summer research program, so I think that's why he reached out to me. I'm really grateful for the opportunity, but I feel like another student from my group deserves it a lot more. She did a huge amount of the work on our lab report and was the one who really helped me understand the project. I want to ask my professor if she'd be able to contribute to the paper, but I'm worried it'll come across as if I'm turning down the opportunity or that I'm not interested in participating. What should I say to him?

Edit: I’m going to speak to him in person on Monday, so I’ll let you all know how it goes! :)
