What kind of extracurriculars and employment do people accepted into med have?

I have a 4.0 GPA, but I’m really worried about my ECs. Right now, I only have a few part-time jobs, some club leadership, a TA position, and volunteering at a children’s hospital.

I’m not really sure which ECs are the most valuable or stand out the most to admissions. I live in a rural area, so I was wondering if it would be better to focus on activities that are more connected to my community instead of trying to do a bunch of generic ECs. Would that make my application more compelling?

Can anyone share examples of high-impact ECs that really carried your application

Does school name and gpa actually not matter?

I’m a 2nd year CS student at UBC with a 4.0 GPA. Is it actually true that school name and GPA don’t matter, meaning I don’t really have an advantage over other applicants even though I attend a top 3 CS school?

I’ve spent most of my time focusing on academics, so I only have a few personal projects and I’ve done a lot of LeetCode, but I don’t have any internships yet. I’m in UBC’s co-op program where I alternate between school and work terms, so I’m planning to start applying for internships soon.

How much does attending a top school and having a high gpa help? Is having strong projects and internship experience really all that matters, or does school reputation and GPA still provide a meaningful advantage?

edit: also how much of an advantage is being in ubc coop vs applying on your own?

Is it common for premeds to look down on people from non traditional majors?

do you guys think its common for pre-meds to look down on people trying to get into med from non traditional and less rigorous majors like fine arts, psychology, english, and computer science? I feel like theres some snark around arts or less rigorous majors compared to traditional majors like chemistry, life science, neuroscience, etc

How would y’all feel about this

We all know GPA isn’t really a good metric past like a 3.8+ since easier majors like health science get easy 4.0s while other majors like biochemistry or medical science is just pure suffering in order to get a perfect 4.0

So what if medical schools adjusted how much they weigh GPA based on an applicant’s MCAT score?

For example, if someone has a relatively lower GPA but a very strong MCAT score, that could indicate they have the academic ability to succeed in medical school despite not having perfect grades. In that case, GPA could be weighted slightly less, allowing other parts of the application to play a larger role.

On the other hand, if someone has a very high GPA but a relatively weak MCAT score, it could suggest that their GPA may not fully reflect their academic ability. Rather than disregarding their GPA entirely since a single exam can‘t fully determine someones academic ability, admissions committees could simply reduce the weighting of their GPA and place greater emphasis on other aspects of the application.

The goal wouldn’t be to punish either group, but to recognize situations where GPA and MCAT tell different stories about an applicant. Would a system like this be more fair than treating GPA and MCAT as largely independent metrics?

Salary range for cs grads?

Anecdotally, what would you say the salary range is for ubc computer science grads who stay in canada? (Maybe just based on your friend group or from what youve seen)

I know there’s a huge amount of variation depending on internships, location, luck, and career path, but I’m curious what the rough range looks like (from lowest to highest and the median)

Exclude people who work in a non related field or end up unemployed

How much less competitive are rural pathways for UBC, UofC, and UofA

I qualify as IP and rural for all three schools. I have a 4.0 gpa, 93% average, and 127 cars but below average extracurriculars. How much easier is it to get an interview invite for each of these schools?

also which school has the ”easiest” rural pathway to get into
