2017 Ford Fusion Wont shift out of park

My 2017 Ford Fusion has now twice been "stuck" in park. The only warning light that comes on is the wrench icon that says "See Manual".

First time we unplugged the battery for 10 minutes and afterwards we were able to get the car into gear. Car was fine for about a month and half. On Wednesday it was stuck again, the battery trick didnt work and after pumping the breaks a bunch of times the car went into gear. But after this time the A/C is only blowing through the defroster and floor vents, it worked fine while the car was stuck in park until I got it in gear.

I took the car to my local dealer and they say the gear shift assembly needs to be replaced because the car is thinking the door is open which is why it wont shift into any gear besides parking as well as a module for the A/C, quoting me about $1600 to replace both.

After all my research on why the gear shift is stuck I never came across the car thinking the door is open as a reason. Has anyone else seen or heard of this being the issue?

TLDR: Gear shift stuck in park, dealer says car thinks door is open, rotary gear shift needs to be replaced. Haven't seen this as a cause online for others, curious if anyone else has.
