How do you use Niri in your daily workflow? Looking for advanced use cases

I use Niri, but I only use basic features:

  • Full-width windows
  • Window resize (Super+R)

Because of this, my workflow feels identical to a standard floating window manager.

Would've love to know how the community is using it? I feel like I don't fully use Niri yet.

Looking for Proton VPN reviews on Linux + Is a VPN actually necessary for a normal consumer?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently on the fence about purchasing a paid VPN subscription. Out of the options out there, Proton VPN stands out as the only reputable, budget-friendly option within my price range (aside from Mullvad).

Before I pull the trigger, I’d love to get some honest reviews from this community, especially regarding two specific aspects of my setup:

1. Linux Mint Performance & Stability

I daily drive Linux Mint. I know there are older reviews and threads about the Proton VPN Linux client, but most look outdated.

  • How is the current state of the official GUI app on Mint?
  • Does features like the Kill Switch or Split Tunneling work reliably without breaking system network configurations?
  • If you use the CLI version instead, how has your experience been?

2. P2P / Torrenting Speeds for Japanese Media

My primary use case is downloading Japanese content (mostly anime via torrents/direct downloads) for language learning purposes. Recently, I’ve noticed my download speeds have heavily tanked compared to how they used to be, which is the main trigger pushing me to get a VPN.

  • For those who use Proton VPN for heavy downloading/P2P, how are the speeds?
  • Do you experience heavy throttling, or does it bypass ISP shaping effectively?
  • Are the Japanese servers fast enough for consistent media fetching?

A broader question: Why does a "normal consumer" actually need a VPN?

Beyond fixing my current speed/download issues, I'm trying to justify the ongoing cost. I don’t do anything high-risk or incredibly sensitive. For a standard consumer who just browses the web, streams, and downloads media at home, why should I consider a VPN a necessity? Is the privacy argument actually practical for everyday use, or is it mostly marketing hype?

Would love to hear your experiences, pros, cons, or alternative insights. Thanks!

Recommendation for Beginner with low-end and old machine

I've been using linux mint for nearly 10 months. And I'd like to have the niri set up on my machine for a change.

What would be the ideal distro for me or recommended set up or guide that I can refer to help my configuring process?

As my experience is quite limited. I only daily drive linux mint for office jobs and a bit game and no more.
