Neighbors aggressive dogs make it impossible to enjoy my backyard.

Location: Missouri

I’ve lived in my house for nearly a year and a half. Some new neighbors moved in around 6 months ago. They have two dogs (looks like a Doberman & pitbull) that bark and growl anytime I enter my own backyard. The dogs are seemingly left outside all day, so I’m never able to enter my yard without getting barked and growled at. I have a privacy fence, but there a slots between the rails where they can see me. Whenever they see me they immediately run up to the fence to bark and growl at me.

One of the dogs (Doberman?) actively tries to jump over the fence whenever I’m in my backyard. I can see the fence shake when the dog jumps against it as it is a large dog.

I’ve contacted animal control and basically got told to fuck off until the dog actually attacks someone. They said they can verify if one of the dog is a pitbull and make sure it’s registered. They said if the dog is a pitbull then it isn’t allowed to be left unattended in the yard. The pitbull isn’t the problem dog. It will join in on the barking if the other dog barks at me long enough, but it doesn’t seem to be a problem on its own. The other dog seems like a ticking time bomb where we’re just waiting for the dog to make it over the fence to maul someone.

I don’t feel safe in my own backyard. I’m genuinely terrified to mow my own backyard as I have to put my back to the fence/dog. I can’t sit and enjoy the fresh air without getting barked and growled at. I’ve been bit by a family member’s dog in the past that I lived with and it showed 0 signs of aggression to me previously, so I basically fully expect to get attacked if this dog ever makes it into my yard.

Is there anything I can do so I can get some peace and enjoyment out of my own backyard? I’ve been thinking about relocating to another city for work, and the dog makes me feel like it will be difficult to sell my house because who would want to live next to a dog that growls and barks at you whenever you’re in your own back yard? Then add in the fact that it tries to jump the fence to attack you, and I’d imagine anyone with kids would immediately lose interest in the house. I have videos on my profile for anyone that wants to actually see what it does.

Lack of a promotion has killed my motivation to work

I’ve been at my job for almost 2 years. When I first started here I was told you typically get promoted around the year mark. When I hit my year mark here I had feedback where they said I was doing a good job, but they didn’t promote me.

A month later one of my coworkers left, and I applied for their position because it started $10K higher than what I currently. I was interviewed as a courtesy, but was told I don’t have the experience for it, so I’d have to start at less than the minimum salary shown on the listing. I declined it assuming that I’d be promoted before too long.

That was 8 months ago, and I still haven’t been promoted. The person they hired for the job I applied for was from a different department where I work, and they have even less experience than me. The job also somehow turned into a remote job since they got hired, and I haven’t seen them in 3-4 months. I applied for a job outside of my department 2 months ago, interviewed for it, and never heard back. The job listing for the second job I applied for is still open.

When I had my year end feedback I asked about the promotion and was told “HR won’t let us promote someone into a position someone else is already in since it’s a small department.” They then turned around and promoted another coworker into a position someone else is also in a few months later.

I have basically 0 motivation at work now. I’ll just zone out and at my screen not doing anything despite having endless amounts of work. I’ve been looking for new jobs, but there’s not a lot open where I live. If I didn’t have bills to pay I probably would’ve just stopped showing up at this point.

I’ve been in credit risk for the past two years and it’s basically drained my soul. I’m underpaid and burnt out, and I’m looking to move into something different. Looking for jobs that aren’t the typical 9-5 Monday-Friday grind your life away type job.

New neighbors moved in a few months back. I didn’t spend much time outside due to the colder weather, but now that it’s starting to warm up I’ve been trying to do yard work and mow. I can’t enter my own backyard without the neighbor’s dog jumping at the fence and barking/growling at me. I’ve had people come over to do work in my backyard, and they say they get growled at and jumped at by the dogs too.

I’m pretty sure the neighbors leave the dogs outside all day. It doesn’t matter when I go outside, the dogs are always there to bark and growl at me for being on my own property. I’ve gone outside to mow after work and get growled at. I’ve waited until later in the evening, and they’re still there to bark and growl. I’ve even gone outside to take my trash to the curb at 11PM, and I’ve still been barked at.

Barking and growling is annoying enough, but I’m paranoid about the dog jumping over the fence while I’m mowing. The vast majority of my yard I’d be mowing with my back to the fence, so I’m paranoid it’s going to get over and I won’t have any idea until it’s too late.

I’ve thought about talking to the neighbors, but the fact they seemingly leave the dogs outside every hour of every day doesn’t give me high hopes they’ll do anything about it. Should I just go straight to animal control to report it?

Update: I’m pretty sure the dogs are neglected at this point. I went to go pick up some tree branches/sticks up from my yard that fell down during a storm earlier this week. I walked to the back of my yard to where I could see part of their living room, and I saw a TV on. I basically just stood looking at the fence for 5-10 minutes while getting barked and growled at before I finally saw their back door open. I thought they were finally taking the dogs inside, but they closed the door basically within 5 seconds of opening it, leaving the dogs outside. The dogs stood outside their door (I’m assuming hoping to be let in) and then came back to bark and jump at the fence. A little bit later the door opened for another 10 seconds and they left them outside again. I didn’t hear them say anything to the dogs, so I have no clue what they even did. Eventually I picked up most of the sticks that I saw and went back inside.
