Owners vs Renters: SOS

I need advice from people who’ve dealt with hostile neighbors and useless HOAs because I’m reaching my limit.

I’ve rented in a connected townhouse community for a couple years and have had ongoing issues with the owners next door almost the entire time. It started with constant noise issues and passive-aggressive behavior, but over time it escalated into repeated banging on shared walls, aggressive confrontations at my door, complaints being filed against me, and what feels like constant attempts to provoke me.

I’ve tried ignoring it. I’ve tried documenting it. I’ve contacted both police and the HOA multiple times. Police say it’s a civil matter, while the HOA only seems interested when complaints are made against me.

At one point I was even fined over complaints that I disputed with evidence and eventually got reversed, which made the whole situation even more frustrating.

What gets me is that I’ve never had issues with anyone else in the neighborhood. I keep to myself, don’t throw parties, and generally try to avoid conflict altogether.

I’ve documented a lot of the behavior because I started feeling like I needed proof, but I honestly don’t know what the next step is when the behavior is persistent enough to affect your quality of life but not “serious enough” for authorities to care.

For anyone who’s dealt with something similar:
- Did you continue documenting?
- Did involving a lawyer actually help?
- Did you eventually move?
- Is there any realistic way to handle this through an HOA?

I’m exhausted and starting to feel trapped in my own home.
