Proud of my cousin brother
Context: We are from India and here, its a common tradition to get girls married off once they reach a certain age..(Early to mid 20s)
Today, one of my cousin sister came to our home to invite us to her wedding, scheduled for next month. She is presently working as a pathologist in a major hospital. The conversation was itself pleasant and she left after spending some hours at our house.
After she left, my mom told us that once she reached the age of 20, her relatives started pressuring her parents to get her married off to someone. She wanted to study and become a doctor but the pressure from relatives was so much that her parents almost relented.
The prospective bride's younger brother, who is also presently a doctor, basically intervened and took a stand on his sister's behalf. He managed to not only convince his parents to allow her to study but also gave an earful to their relatives.. Those relatives in question started maintaining their distance to my cousin's family afterwards.
Upon hearing this from my mom, I'm so proud of him. When the pressure is so much, it becomes hard to take a stand. He did the right thing. My cousin successfully completed her medicine degree and after couple of years of working as a pathologist, found herself a life partner.
