Our Puppy loves sleeping on the balcony
Hello everyone! We just got our little Samoyed puppy on Saturday and she is a delight. She is 9 weeks old and really loves being around us already.
That being said, I might have messed up a little bit already. The breeder that we got her from had a special area outside for them to pee and poop. They had synthetic grass pads and she told me that the puppies are used to going on them for their needs. So, I ended up purchasing a grass pad for the balcony so that we could teach her to go there.
However, as soon as we arrived home with her, I took her to the pad and she tried sleeping on it. I waited for a bit but had no success, however, as soon as I brought her inside her pen, she peed on the indoor pad, as well as inside her crate.
Now, after 2 days she is a lot more relaxed with us, however she got the bad habbit of doing her needs in the crate and demanding to sleep on the balcony. We crated her on both nights and it goes pretty well, she whines and barks for 5-10 minutes and then settles, however it doesn’t matter how many times I get up to take her outside, she absolutely refuseses to pee and poop in any other place than her pen/crate.
Also, if we try to crate her during the day, she will lose her mind, however, we can leave her completely alone on the balcony and she will just sleep.
I want to mention that the balcony is fully secured, there is no way for her to jump or do something stupid, it is completely planked on the lower part and we also have a very sturdy safety net above the rail.
I just don’t want to teach her that the pen/crate is only for her needs, and I am also concerned that once summer starts and the temps will rise, the balcony will not be safe for her during the day and I don’t want her barking all day long.
How would you act in this situation?
