I (19M) accidentally found out my girlfriend of 5 months and my best friend were betraying me. Now my entire friend group is picking sides.
I’m typing this from a local café because my phone won't stop ringing and I need to get this off my chest before I completely lose my mind.
Some background: My best friend—let’s call him Rohan—and I have been inseparable for over four years. We did everything together: gym, gaming, late-night food runs, you name it. He was basically family to me. Five months ago, I started dating "Riya," a girl from a nearby college. Rohan was the first person I told, and when they met, they clicked instantly.
At first, I thought I was the luckiest guy alive. My girlfriend got along great with my best friend, and our whole social circle felt super tight.
Then small things started feeling off around two months ago.
Rohan would randomly show up at places where Riya and I were hanging out, claiming he was "just in the area." Riya started wearing a specific silver chain that I’d never seen before, claiming her cousin gifted it to her. Rohan suddenly started going to the gym at weird hours and getting defensive whenever I asked why he was cancelling our usual weekend plans.
Whenever the three of us hung out, there was this subtle inside-joke vibe between them that made me feel like a third wheel in my own relationship. But anytime I mentioned it to Riya, she’d laugh it off and say, "You're being paranoid, he's like a brother to me."
The truth came out two days ago on Friday night.
A group of us went out to a local place to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Rohan was there, Riya was there. Around 11 PM, Rohan said he felt sick, paid his share, and left early. About twenty minutes later, Riya said her phone battery was dead, slipped out to "use the restroom," and didn't come back for 15 minutes.
I got concerned, took her portable charger from my jacket, and went toward the hallway near the back exit to check on her.
As I walked down the dimly lit corridor near the staff door, I saw two people standing close together in the shadow. I paused, thinking it was just another couple. Then I recognized the jacket—it was Rohan’s oversized jacket that he had supposedly worn home.
He hadn't left. He was standing there with Riya.
Before I could even process what I was seeing, I heard her whisper, "He has no idea. Just wait until next weekend when he's out of town."
My blood turned to ice. I didn't yell or make a scene. I walked straight up to them, pulled out my phone, and turned on the flashlight directly into their faces.
The look of sheer, pale terror on Rohan's face is something I’ll never forget. Riya froze, trying to stammer out a lie, but I didn't give them the chance. I looked Rohan dead in the eye and said, "Four years, man."
I turned around, walked back to the table, grabbed my jacket, and left the restaurant without saying a word to the rest of the group.
Within an hour, my phone blew up. Riya sent a wall of text claiming "it was just a stupid mistake" and that "nothing physical happened" (which is a complete lie based on what I saw). Rohan sent a pathetic 3-page paragraph blaming alcohol and begging me not to tell our mutual friends.
I didn't reply to either of them. Instead, I dropped a screenshot of Rohan's confession text into our main group chat with 8 of our closest friends and simply typed: "Good luck to both of you."
Now the entire group is fractured. Half of them are completely disgusted with Rohan and have kicked him out of the group, while a couple of guys are telling me I "handled it too harshly" by publicly exposing them instead of handling it privately.
I blocked Riya everywhere. I haven't spoken to Rohan since Friday. I feel completely numb, betrayed by my two favorite people at the exact same time. How do you ever trust anyone again after this?
