I’m torn between pure Mathematics and Mathematics & Statistics, advice?

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask: why did you guys choose Mathematics & Statistics instead of pure Mathematics?

I’m asking because this was actually one of the first courses I seriously considered, I even sent inquiries to the school about it. I still think it looks like one of the most balanced and practical options.

At the same time though, part of me feels like pure math is more foundational and gives a deeper understanding of the underlying structures behind statistics, modelling, ML, etc.

So I’m curious:
- what made you personally choose Math & Statistics?
- do you feel you missed out on “core math” depth?
- or do you think the applied/statistical side gives better long-term value?

Considering The Open University for Maths & Statistics as a mature student

I’m 36, based in Canada, and currently enrolled in a certified program at BCIT.

While studying, I’ve realized that I want to learn math and statistics. I’ve tried self-studying, but I keep feeling like I’m missing foundational pieces, so it’s been hard to make consistent progress. Because of that, I’ve been considering doing some kind of online degree or structured program, and The Open University is one of the options I’m looking at.

Has anyone here studied Maths and Statistics at The Open University? How was your experience?
Did you find the teaching/support good for someone rebuilding their foundations later in life? How manageable was it alongside work or other studies?

Any advice or things I should know before applying?
