Next module starts in October, what to do until then?

Having finished my two Stage 1 modules, I'm waiting on A223 starting in October. Any ideas on what I can fill the time with and to keep my study brain going?

I was thinking doing some of the OpenLearn modules. I welcome suggestions.

My college is accredited by OU, will my degree be as strong as the OU degree ?

My advisor says that yes the degree will be the same and it will be dual named.

My college doesn’t offer all the OU programs only a few such as biomedical science, CS, cybesecurity/IT and Accounting/Finance.
I picked cs.

Also the degree doesn’t have module structure, the curriculum is more in line with American colleges (general education courses and around 30 field related courses).

Has anyone here actually finished a BSc in Maths (or joint) while working full-time? Need a reality check.

I'm looking into starting a BSc in Mathematics (or a joint degree like Maths and Physics/Stats) with the OU, but I work 40 hours a week.

I know advanced math really well. I had a degree but lost in displacement and that's a story for another day. So, the OU curriculum isn't a stranger for me.

I know the official study time guidelines, but I want to hear from people who have actually been in the trenches.

  • Did you try to do 120 credits a year, or did you stick to part-time?
  • How brutal was the jump in difficulty and time commitment going from Level 1 to Levels 2 & 3?
  • Did you basically have to give up all your weekends, or is there a strategic way to stagger the modules so you don't burn out?

Any raw advice or regret-sharing is welcome. Thanks!

P.S. I must need a degree in math for professional reason because I have reached a glass ceiling.

Withdrawing from a module after it has started - what are the consequences?

Basically as the title says, I am wanting to withdraw from TM112 after it has started because I am finding myself disengaged with the content and struggling to understand due to a lack of interest. What are the consequences of this? Will the penalties be added to my student loan?

Thanks!

Has anybody managed to get into GEM by doing biomedical sciences with the OU?

Considering doing it as I can’t attend a brick and mortar university at present but graduate entry medicine is my ultimate goal

Does anyone have experience of the BEng, in particular the environmental or energy route?

I’ve been studying environmental science with the OU and have really enjoyed it, I’ve completed U116 and S112 and have just chosen my modules for stage 2. The reason I chose env sci is simply because I love ecology and conservation and that would be my dream career, but I do voluntary work in conservation already and I know it’s difficult to find sustainable paid work in it. I volunteer with a few different charities and pretty much everyone is also a volunteer, the few paid staff are all on contracts and have to bounce around place to place. Most of the skills needed are also very much self taught, I have one surveying license and plan to get others but these don’t need any formal qualifications at all so I could try to stay in conservation even without a degree.

I’ve been thinking about changing my degree to the BEng instead, as they do an environmental route and an energy route both of which do interest me and I think might have more career options that are still satisfying to me.

The downsides that I’m foreseeing so far is that there’s no placement options and I hear engineering is a difficult industry to break into now especially if you don’t have any practical experience, and I also don’t know if my maths will ever be good enough. I got through the env sci modules but it was difficult.

How do Tutors check for AI or cheating?

I submitted an EMA today, then did the online turnitin check. It said 17%, with 13% being my references? a <1% being the word "This". But worst of all, I got a similarity to a paraphrase being AI generated, I wrote this myself.

The only AI that would have been used is anything that comes with office 365 spell/ grammer check.

I can't imagine I'll get pulled up I mean my writing style is basically identical to the last TMA I submitted but I am curious how it all works?

Survey Project

Hello. I would like to ask for help. I am finishing my dissertation project and would appreciate it if people could participate in my project survey. It's just 3 minutes. Please use the link provided.

This research concerns the human authentic self and how the use of AI can affect the decisions we make.

Research by the Open University Psychology studies.

Thank you.

Just submitted my final TMA of my first module!

It doesn't feel real right now but I actually did it. I completed a whole module. I was a secondary school dropout so it feels like a huge deal :')

I'm studying part time so this is 1 year down, 5 more to go, but I know it'll go so quickly. I'm just so proud of myself.

Academic integrity issues

I’m actually so distraught and sad cause I keep getting TMA flagged for academic integrity and it’s so annoying because the wording are most basic and I actually do them myself. Like I write the most basic answers because of this now and still get flagged ? Like this issue is in going and start to affect me like feel like dropping it but I have spent way too much money on this course (hons biology)

Self plagiarism ?

I’m doing an assignment currently that relates to a topic I already wrote about in a previous TMA. Will I get in trouble if I copy one of my own paragraphs? I’ve edited and added bits in so it’s not the exact same. I don’t want to get in shit but they could at least diversify the questions so I don’t have to repeat myself, this module has been dreadful for it.

History degree

What are the subjects available to study in the History degree with OU. I've looked on the website and it seems very limited, the choice. Is that the case? I'm surprised.

Has anyone been through the post-exam 15 min discussion for level 2 and 3 modules?

Currently doing a level 2 module - S284 to be specific, and there is a post-exam discussion however from what I know they're going to be doing this with only a set amount of students rather than everyone. I wonder what this is like??

Are they going to test me on the entire module's knowledge? Are they going to only discuss the questions from the exam with me? I'm kind of nervous for this haha, this sounds like a half oral examination in my Anxiety induced mind.

They better not try to throw me off lol. Sometimes I can't even remember half the stuff I answered after an exam.

Tutor Issues

Hi guys, I'm just looking for some advice regarding one of my modules. I have been assigned a tutor and, quite frankly, they are useless. I have asked for help with specific areas of the module that had been covered in a few TMA's and they did not respond, and their TMA marking doesn't actually talk about things i can improve on. What can i do in this case? Thanks in advance.

DE200 assignments, preparation and help

I am starting DE200 next year while studying full time and I constanly hear about how horrible the assignments are?

Can someone who’s done this module please just tell me how the assignments work?

from what I understand there are 5 normal TMAs, 2 ICMAs where there are 4 questions and I have 24 hours to write an answer to two of them and then the EMA where I an given six questions and they choose two questions that I should write 24 hours before the deadline?

Discretionary postponement

Hi all,

I got my EMA submission on the 4th of June. It’s been hard to focus on it and I’m also dealing with bereavement. Do they normally ask for evidence of death for this? I’m not sure what evidence I can give in that case, I’ve always been on time and have submitted all of my TMAs without extension.

Study Schedule

Hey everyone,

I’m thinking about joining Open University, but I’m about 6 hours ahead in time zone.

I was wondering how the study schedule usually works. Is it mostly recorded lectures/self-study, or are there frequent live online classes with professors?

Just trying to see how manageable it is with the time difference. Would love to hear from current students 😁

Thanks in advanced!!

Edit: I want to study BSc (Hon) Cyber Security and I think I am going to study part time. Thanks

Project Struggle

Hi all,

Im currently doing TM470 as my last module. I have undiagnosed ADHD (on the waiting list for assessment) and the thought of writing a long report is honestly daunting and fills me with dread. I've tried to cut it into smaller bits to do but then when I have to read back through it I get so overwhelmed and lose my track of thought or would rather be doing ANYTHING else. Its my last module so I cant swap it to anything else and I really dont want to defer cos i dont think thatll help in the long run as I will still have to do it.

Is there anyways I can make it easier for myself? I only got 23 marks on my first TMA, which honestly made me wanna cry.

Part time study, but lots of modules start in the same month

I'm looking at continuing my degree, but a bit concerned with how it's laid out.

I'm looking at the new Comp sci + AI degree R88.

Year 1 looks fine, I've got 2 modules done there and I can do TM129 and then MST124 with some overlap but not terrible.

But then it says for year 3 both of the modules start in October, is it normal to study 2 modules at the same time when studying part time?

Then again in year 5 they both start in October, then in year 6 they both start very close to each other.

Loking at the data science degree too, and literally all of the stage 2 and above modules start in October.

Does anyone here have experience with working full time and also trying to study 2 modules at the same time?
