I'm the only one of my grandpa's grandchildren who carry his last name, and I am the first person in his family history to graduate college with his last name. Trouble is I fucked around, job hopping and hanging out with drifters and druggies for six years after high school, and didn't start college until I was 24. Now I'm finally graduating, but he's 85 and his health has declined substantially over the last few months and he will not be able to attend the ceremony (it's outdoors and a substantial drive from where he lives). He's been so excited about this ever since I told him I was going back to school and he's trying to play it off like he's content that I'm graduating, but I can tell that he's really disappointed he won't be able to attend. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for this blunder.
