Hi everyone,
I need some advice on a tricky neck joint repair on my Epiphone SG G-400 (2010, Worn Cherry). The previous owner tried to "fix" a crack at the heel/neck joint by screwing two screws straight through the heel into the neck (they look like basic door screws). There was no glue at all in the joint. Over time, I realized that these screws might cause more damage because the neck was still trying to move under string tension, crushing the wood around the screws and making the issues much worse. I removed the screws and all the strings a few minutes ago to stop the tension. The joint is now loose, and the crack is clearly visible. It starts at the heel and extends both into the neck and slightly into the body. There are also two ugly holes left by the screws. I’ve attached photos and a short video showing the damage from different angles.
I know some people will probably tell me to just give up on this guitar and that it’s not worth saving. Even if they might be right, I really like this SG and I’m determined to try and repair it on my own properly instead of abandoning it.
