I’m curious if anyone else has had a bit of a rough “hat journey,” because I feel like I’m going in circles trying to figure this out.
I’ve now tried 3 different cowboy hats (including a brand new Akubra Rough Rider), and while they all look great on me and feel fine at first, I keep getting the same issue after a couple of hours: hair follicle pain. Sometimes it’s random across the scalp, but there’s also one specific spot that seems to flare up every single time, even across different hats. What’s strange is there’s no obvious tightness or pressure while wearing — it’s more of a delayed thing.
I’m starting to wonder if it’s partly my hair (curly/messy) getting compressed and slowly pulled out of its natural direction under the weight of the hat. At the same time, I’m confused because you always hear that a properly fitting hat should “disappear,” or that you just get used to it.
I’ve tried different sizes and styles, and I’m now at the point where I’m not even sure a custom would solve it if it’s just a “me” issue rather than a fit issue.
So I’m genuinely curious:
👉 Has anyone else dealt with hair follicle discomfort like this?
👉 Did you eventually adapt, or did you have to change hat type/material?
👉 Or are there just some people who love the look but can’t wear them long-term?
Would be great to hear real experiences rather than just sizing advice … my last attempt will be to cut my hair down short… but I’m probably just clutching at straws there as I’m certain long hair under a hat should be a non issue 👍
