Areas to avoid in neighborhood of Howard University and Washington DC

I am very new to Washington DC and in Howard University. My safety is always my first priority. Recently I saw a guy shouting at another man very badly and was about to hit with a steel water bottle. I was really scared. I don't want to face even a small confrontation with strangers at all like that. I don't know whether those two guys know each other. I don't like to walk much in large groups like I have 3 friends at max and mostly I walk with 2. I like doing everything alone but after past news and after this incident I felt like Washington DC isn't for me. When I have to buy something I have to go outside, when I have to pick up orders I have to go outside. For those who know the Howard University area well, are there any nearby neighborhoods or streets you’d recommend avoiding for safety reasons?

Help: On campus employment

I am a domestic student, and my roommate is an international student. We both want to get an on-campus job at Howard University as soon as possible after arriving on this fall. I know jobs are posted on Handshake, but I don't think it's a good idea to rely only on that. Since international students are not eligible for Federal Work-Study, what are the best ways for both of us to find on-campus jobs quickly after arriving on campus this Fall 2026?

If you have any ideas & strategies on how to find a job as quickly as possible, whether for domestic or international students, please let me know. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Please pls it's really important for both of us 😭😭

Presidential scholar Book voucher $610

I see on my Financial Aid on the bison hub that the book voucher provided is $610 per semester. Is that thing through which i will purchase the coursework material for my classes? I have seen some people saying that book voucher is $950 but it shows $610 on my account. Also, some are saying they are purchasing Macbook using that voucher, like without adding money. How is this possible? Am i making conflict on that Book voucher ($610) and stipend ($950). Can someone clarify this to me

RA in Howard - Undergraduate

I have seen lots of my friends involved in Research assistantship in other universities from undergraduate level but I'm completely unaware about Howard. For those students related to Computer science or related fields, how hard is it to find an RA position? I heard that being very interactive & close with a professor might help? But which professor & which faculty are the one with most RA opportunities? If there are any ideas regarding undergraduate research assistantship please share.

I recently underwent ear surgery that included an atticotomy, tympanoplasty, and ossiculoplasty on my right ear. It has now been 9 days since the procedure. I have just removed the bandage yesterday. Overall, my recovery seems to be going well, and I am not experiencing pain or other major issues. However, since the surgery, I have been continuously hearing a heartbeat-like sound (similar to blood pumping) in my right ear. When I researched more, I found it is called pulsatile tinnitus. Because of this disturbance, I cannot hear properly even from my left ear.

I am unsure whether this is a normal part of the healing process. The intensity of the sound varies—it sometimes becomes louder and at other times softer. At the initial day of surgery it was worse, now it is like coming going comming going. When I raise my head it comes softer and sometimes it completely goes out (though that time the ear feels completely blocked)

Is this type of sound common after such surgeries? Approximately how long does it usually take for this sensation to go away? I'm scared because this can be a side effect and I don't want to go to surgery again for this.
