Tibial Avulsion Surgery Failed Twice

We adopted a rescue 13 week old Airedale in October last year. In mid December she required her first tibial avulsion surgery after landing on her rear right light wrong at daycare.

We followed care protocol closely but found out in January the surgery didn’t take. We believe it failed after she heard a noise outside and reacted before we could restrict her. Cut to surgery #2 in February. We were even more diligent in restriction after this surgery but during her 10 day check up the vet told us the second surgery failed, as well. We think it failed the first day, possibly before we even got her home.

She is now a 50 lb 10 month old and we’ve been asking numerous ortho surgeons what to do. None are giving us much clarity. Maybe retry the same surgery, maybe try one of two other options, maybe amputate. She’s such a sweet and happy girl and we really can’t fathom putting her through any more pain, not amputation.

I don’t presume a clear answer will come from here, but if anyone can advise on what our likely best option is I’m all ears. Or if they’ve heard of similar cases and subsequent treatment plans.
