Decreased Feedings & Apartment Living

My (4M) orange cat is 14lbs and about a month ago, at his check-up appointment, the vet suggested decreasing his feedings by 30% to get him down to 10lbs.

My fiancé and I are at our wits end because his crying is incessant.

We feed him Sheba perfect portions x2/day (6:30am, 4:00pm), and three 1/12 cups of Iams dry food (4:30am, 7:00pm, 10:00pm) from an auto feeder. He was getting a 10:00am feeding while we were at work, but I scrapped it. We essentially decreased his food by 15%.

I want to just ignore him and let him cry it out because I know giving him attention is motivating him to continue, but we live in an apartment complex. It just isn’t fair to our neighbors that they also have to listen to him cry.

I’ve tried to play with him more, albeit probably still not enough. We are about ready to just let him continue eating. We aren’t able to sleep through the night and the stress is building.

We love our boy and this whole thing has put a lot of strain on the relationship. I want to do right by him and his health, but I also don’t want a noise complaint or to feel resentment towards him.

What do I do??
