Gold-fill wedding bands? Is there a reason these aren’t as popular as gold-plated tungsten/titanium?

We’re searching for a wedding band for my fiancé. I was concerned about titanium and tungsten due to safety concerns, but finally gave in to looking at some. I’m discouraged that they can only be gold-plated, not gold-filled, and it sounds like the gold plating doesn’t last very long, which isn’t surprising. He’s also adamant about not paying for solid gold, especially since he likes a wider band.

So I was thinking, sterling silver or another base metal with gold fill would last a lot longer (especially since he will wear a silicone band to work) and it would remove any safety concerns…. Is there a good reason why gold-plated tungsten and titanium are still so much more popular? If gold-fill is in fact a good idea, does anyone know who sells them? I’ve only found one site with gold-fill wedding bands and it’s overseas.

Thank you!
