Genuine question from a 9–5 person living in Astoria

Why are there always so many middle-aged guys hanging outside places like The Coffee Pot during the day? Like I swear they occupy an entire block sometimes. What do these guys do for work? Retired? Night shifts? Small business owners? I’m genuinely curious about the daytime social scene here.

And then at night it feels like half of them migrate to Kitty Sullivan’s 😭

Also around Steinway, especially near the hookah spots, why is everyone always outside no matter if it’s noon or midnight? Meanwhile I’m chained to a 9–5 wondering what secret lifestyle they’ve unlocked.

Small creator dilemma: support local businesses or “gatekeep” them?

I run a local food account with around 2K views, and occasionally some posts unexpectedly get 10–20K views. But what’s interesting is that those posts often only get 2–3 likes, while the comments are full of people saying things like I should “gatekeep” these spots or asking why I even shared them.

It honestly makes me a bit uncomfortable every time. I want these local businesses to do well, but at the same time I don’t think my influence is strong enough to “ruin” their authenticity or completely change their vibe. Maybe at most, they get a bit busier for a few weeks.

Do you think I’m the only one who feels weird about those kinds of comments? Or is that actually just a sign that the restaurant is really that good and people want to protect it?
