Men of the Philippines, what is your opinion about the DGR movement?
Just for context:
"The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride"
This is a movement that is aimed to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men's mental health. It has been held every May of each year since 2012.
I've known about the DGR since 2022, but this is my first time joining it, and boy, do I have mixed feelings about this.
I've chosen to ride with my home province chapter as this place is where my heart is. Going without knowing anyone there was exciting as I was looking forward to meeting fellow classic motorcycle enthusiasts.
When I finally got there, let's just say it was more about exclusivity and materialistic prestige rather than brotherhood and commaraderie. The bigger your engine displacement, the more "distinguished" you are.
There are also a lot of young men in their early 20s who just started their working career. Many came in with their unpopular brand of motorcycles and JS prom suits. You can see that they really want to be there and are proud of what they have.
But something in the air was off. There really is an exclusivity between the "big bikes"/"vespa" owners and the aforementioned young men. Then comes the reception event, I sense that most of the newcomers felt out of place, that none of the veterans won't even talk to us, and made a presence of welcome.
But what really broke the event for me was the behavior of the MC during the reception. Underhanded jibes and sly profanity are thrown everywhere, especially at women who participated in the event. This 65-year-old man did not age like wine, full of insecurities. It's like looking at a little boy trapped in an old man's body.
Lest we forget, it is "Manners maketh man" and not your big bikes and substandard helmets. Imagine having a big displacement bike but can't afford a decent brand of safety gears, plus having the audacity to join a movement with the word "gentleman" in it and yet still act like an ass.
What a waste of a perfectly good Sunday.
Anyone here who had a different experience and or opinion?
