Conversations with friends that feel draining

I have a friend who tends to talk a lot about herself (or the guy she's dating). I know a few people like this, but she's the closest person to me who acts like this.

Sometimes we get into a conversational pattern where she talks about the same topic for 1-2 hours straight. I'm naturally curious, so I ask a lot of questions and keep the conversation going, but it often feels less like a conversation and more like she's the speaker and I'm the audience.

Then after she's finished, she'll ask something like "oh I talk so much, so tell me about your life".

By that point I honestly often feel drained. I'm generally a very extroverted person and usually leave social interactions feeling energized. But when someone mostly uses me as a sounding board for their thoughts, without showing much curiosity about me during the conversation, I end up feeling exhausted.

It feels weird that I really dislike the "your turn" question, it makes me feel guilty that I get irritated at her for asking me that question but at that point I just don't feel like sharing the things that I wanted to share. because it often feels like she isn't genuinely curious about me and my perspective, she's just done with talking so then she's ready to switch roles.

I think part of the problem is that I'm bad at noticing when a conversation is becoming draining in the moment. I tend to realize it too late, when I'm already exhausted and then it's harder to redirect the conversation or to bring up topics I'm interested in.

Does anyone else experience this? How do you handle situations like this?
