In need of caregiving advice for a friend who had throat cancer. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
My uncle had a tonsilectomy and around 30 rounds of radiation as well as chemo in 2015 when they found squamous cells in his tonsils.
Radiation caused his thyroid to not function well, his vagus nerve has suffered degenerative and thus far irreparable nerve damage which gives him speech and swallow difficulties called dysphasia. He also has erratic blood pressure - he’s on BP meds and thyroid. Neither of which seems to make much difference.
Since his vagus nerve is damaged and it’s responsible for functions such as speech, swallow, blood pressure, and digestion, he’s suffering in all of the above.
He was given a G-tube to administer Boost and Kate Farms since he wasn’t swallowing correctly; However, it’s hard for him to tolerate the food. It makes him nauseous and his blood pressure drops precipitously when he eats, so he just continues to lose weight. He’s 6’4 and has lost around 67lbs and is down to 143lbs.
He has been treated in the LA area at Cedars Sinai, UCLA, City of Hope, and at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. He’s probably seen a dozen and half doctors in various fields and it seems that no one can help him. All they suggest are different liquid food formulas for him to try but he may need a different method of delivering nutrients and calories.
Anyone out there familiar with any similar conditions?
More importantly we’re looking for a gastrointestinal doctor who oversees nutrition of post cancer patients who may be able to help. We can’t seem to find the right care team for him.
