Guardian Tales, a game ignored for years... on the verge of disappearing
First of all, I'm new to this community and finally decided to summon the courage to write something about this game after playing it consecutively for about 5 years. So, I hope you like it, and any questions are more than welcome!
With that being said, you might be wondering, what is this game called "Guardian Tales"? It’s a Korean ARPG developed by Kong Studios, launched globally in 2020 during the pandemic, and available on mobile devices and Nintendo Switch. To this day, it’s still standing, but the future looks a bit dark for it—something I'll explain at the end of this post.
The game starts with a classic story about a Knight who must protect the Kingdom of Kanterbury from invading forces. To do this, we must gather countless heroes during our journey to fight back. But it’s not as simple as many might think! The game mixes an eye-catching Pixel Art and 3D style right from the prologue, where we are introduced to this wonderful world. And—spoiler alert—the prologue is much more important than it seems, but to understand why, you have to try it for yourself! The game is quite long and will keep you busy with the sheer number of mysteries it hides. Yes, the story is so long and well-structured that even the most loyal fans can't decipher everything this game has to offer.
It starts out calm and relaxing, but the conflicts escalate exponentially due to your presence—the player—who acts as an anomaly in the very fabric of this universe. You go from being a simple knight defeating goblins to practically facing off against deities.
The game is divided into seasons, and each season has a set number of "worlds" available. Currently, there are 3 almost complete seasons, and we are waiting for the climax of the third one, which is expected to come out around July. (Development is slow; the last world was released in September of last year... the company is going through some struggles).
During these worlds, you will go from the Kanterbury Forest to deserts, frozen mountains, and even other planets, presenting different challenges that are cleverly intertwined. That’s why I love this game! It barely has any plot holes; everything is so well-written that nothing exists or happens just because.
If you are looking for a game that can give you over 400 hours of playtime, one that is original and not just another generic product, this is your chance! For now, at least... since the game is in a very delicate state due to some creative decisions and revenue cuts for the development company. So please, if you have the time and want to experience an interesting story, give it a shot before it’s too late.
Fun fact! This game is a prequel to another mobile game that shut down its servers in 2019, and yes, that means both games are connected. More lore!
I ask you, dear reader, please don’t judge the game based on what others might say. Yes, I know it’s a gacha game, and they tend to be hated, but I promise you that here, the gacha elements almost take a back seat. If you build a decent team, you won't have to worry about it. Plus, the game is super player-friendly! Maybe too friendly... to the point where right when you start the game, you can already get a fully maxed-out character. Yes, that’s a bit of a design flaw, but it would be worse if it were impossible and they bombarded you with "buy this to upgrade your character" ads, right?
With all that said, please give it a try. It’s packed with pop culture references and tons of things to look into and investigate for hours.
