To run or not to run?

I've had a few homies tell me about run ins with police while writing, and in some cases they run and get away, but I've heard other people just stop painting and walk away. Usually that seems to end with the cop either rolling by without saying anything, or stopping and asking questions. I've never seen anyone get arrested, at most their bag gets taken. I've never been seen by a cop as far as I know, and I tend to panic in high stress scenarios.

I'm not a fast runner by any means and pretty bad at hopping fences, is it smarter to just not run? I feel like that just initiates a chase and can make things worse for you especially if they catch you.
