I like Hoplomachus Victorum in theory but not in practice, what's a good alternative?
I've made the decision to sell my copy of Hoplomachus Victorum. I liked the Slay The Spire-esque map progression, the thinky tactical combat, the bag building aspects of how enemies show up, the general roguelike approach. But after a while the battles got really grindy, despite the enemies and player abilities having small changes it all kind of felt like the same thing over and over. I spent the whole time wishing the campaign was made up of less battles but that the battles were bigger, more consequential, with more interesting enemies and abilities and that there was more to differentiate each one.
Now in theory I'd like to still try find a game like what I wished Hoplomachus would be. Tactical chess-like battles with just enough randomness to keep you on your toes, short-ish campaigns, roguelike progression, and that promise of deep replayability and system mastery. Is there another chip theory game that would fit the bill? Or is there another game or publisher entirely I should be looking at?
