Looking for a new game

Hello everyone!

I am interested in a few games and wanted to see if anyone had feedback that could help me out based on current games I like.

My favorite games: Spirit Island, Voidfall, Mage Knight, Cascadia, Let's Go to Japan

Games I enjoy: Heat, Wingspan, Artistry, Cascadia Rolling Rivers

Games I did not enjoy: Robinson Crusoe, Sagrada, Trekking the National Parks

Games that I am interested in: Obsession, Nusfjord, Deckers, Dune Imperium Uprising, Final Girl

Based on all that, which would you recommend?

Voidfall - played my first game on normal difficulty today

Man this game is something else. I feel like I’m getting my bearings a bit and checking rule book less often. I’m barely scratching the surface but feels good to win on normal. Felt like easy hasn’t been super dooper difficult.

Snuck out the victory by 17 points. Shout out to completing a safe haven and removing a harbinger after all actions were complete for the 30 point swing.

There is a chance I may have missed something small but pretty sure I played everything right.

Also anyone tryna get into the game the tutorial is super helpful and then table for ones videos have been invaluably helpful

Underquest is so good

On my third game and I’ve been really loving it. Tin Realm was my previous favorite Jason Glover game and this is a souped up version of it. It takes the mechanics I liked from that game and adds a ton more variety and immersion.

I also found my optimal way to track stats. I use tokens for gold, curses, XP, and rations. Then cubes for everything else. This lets me use gold cubes as my max health, grit, and encumbrance as well as keeping the poison on the same track as health.

Looking forward to the first expansion too!

How is Deckers at solo and multiplayer?

I play a lot of solo games and I love coop games like Spirit Island and Horrified, so I wanted to hear from you guys how Deckers does at both multiplayer and solo. I'd love to hear all your thoughts, especially with regard to these two points:

  1. How's the replayability?

  2. How's the learning curve?

Looking for beautiful boardgames with an actual win/lose condition (not just beat your own score/points threshold)

I'm looking for new solo board games to add to my collection that check three boxes:

  1. A real win/lose condition, not just BYOS or that winning is reaching a certain number of points.
  2. Gorgeous components and/or art
  3. Have a cozy theme

I have already decided to get Wild Gardens, but I also want to add another game.
Games I already have in my collection:

  • Dorfromantik Sakura (love how it looks, don't like how it plays)
  • Harmonies (also loves how it looks, but doesn't like the solo-mode. It's ok with the melodies campaign though, but I prefer this multiplayer)
  • Eila & Something Shiny (Love everything about this! But have already played the campaign several times)
  • Mythwind (One of my favourites!)
  • Horizons of Spirit Island
  • A place for all my books
  • Spire's End Hildegard
  • Stonesaga (another one of my favourites)
  • Wingspan
  • Wyrmspan
  • Witchbound (Like the art, but not the components, which feel cheap and flimsy)
  • Daydream (don't like that it's BYOS)
  • Koi (The win condition in solomode is reaching a certain number of points, which I don't like)
  • Onirim
  • A light in the mist
  • Stardew Valley
  • Slay the Spire
  • A gentle rain
  • Awaken the Ancients (my favourite small box/quick playing game)
  • Witchcraft!
  • Vantage
  • Storyfold Wildwoods

Even though I prefer narrative games, I already have a few ongoing, so that's not what I'm looking for right now.

Easy to setup Euro games

Does anyone know any Euro games that are easy to setup?

I have Nusfjord Big Box and Viticulture Essential. Both amazing games, but Nusfjord is a little too tedious to set up.

Leaning into worker placement, deck building and such, but I am open to anything with good variability and replayability.

Kanban EV solo

While this is not the heaviest solo that I ever played, it is close to it.
A few weeks ago I've played my first multiplayer game of Kanban EV, and I loved it so much. But the solo affair is punishing. I won 2 and lost 3 games (once even being fired after my last meeting). The game is definitely crunchy and tense, but my first and only multiplayer game (4p) left a much stronger impression. This round I won, 37 points.

I will definitely play more of it, I will make it part of my x10 challenge.

Finding combat-focused solo games similar to "Hercules and the 12 Labours"?

Hi guys, I had just finished Hercules and the 12 Labours, and wow, what a fantastic game. Thus, I'm looking for combat-focused games like that, with the following things in mind:

• Would not be too complex to set up (< 2 mins set up time).

• Would not take too much space, as I only have a small working desk.

• Preferrably good artworks.

• Playtime is less than 2 hours.

If you guys know and love any games like that, could you guys recommend me? I'm having Gloomhavens and Aeon's End in mind.

Thanks a lot fellow boardgamers !

HELP there are too many cool games!

I’ve always been a minimalist. I hate clutter and try and keep my possessions to a minimum. But earlier this year I tried out Dragons of Etchinstone as a fun, compact, solo analog experience. Absolutely loved it! And it made me curious about other solo games…

My collection now contains Jaws of the Lion, Dragons of Etchinstone, and Aeon’s End, and I really want to buy UnderQuest and Radiance… but I’ve got to stay strong. No more, unless I sell one.

If you could only own 3 games, what would they be?

Learning my first Lacerda - Speakeasy

Was lucky enough to get this as a birthday present from my sister. Big big box of gorgeousness.
The rules are not too complicated, however the strategy to win is extremely daunting!
Taking it one step at a time but so far enjoying the challenge.

Looking for heavy weight euro for advanced player

Hello

I am seeking recommendation for an ultimate heavy-weight euro/brain burning game. So far my favourite games are:

Twilight Imperium IV

Barrage

Food Chain Magnate

Terraforming Mars

Scythe

Gloomhaven

Generally I would say I like games that rely on planning, developing (characters, cities, nations, industries - doesn't matter that much what it is exactly) and making decision that is best in current moment. I rather avoid games with randomness. For solo modes, I prefer automa or win condition based games, not a fan of byos. I think my favourite one so far is Scythe automa.

Ideally if one play can wrap up in 2-2.5hrs, however that is not a hard limitation. Can be a campaign game, then time is bound to one scenario.

I was looking at:

Europa Universalis

Hoplomachus: Victorum

One of Lacerda's game (never played any, not sure which one is best for solo and on the short end)

Anachrony

Pax Pamir or Pax Renessaince

Age of Steam

I'd appreciate if you can suggest other titles or give a hint which one would fit best - or the other way around, if any is too close to games I already own/like or wouldn't match needs. Thank you in advance!

Are there any upcoming Mage Knight-like games?

Unreleased games which are not neccessarily exactly like Mage Knight, but with similar concept of being a thematic puzzle. I wonder whether anything like that is in plans.

Hadrian’s Wall wasn’t as daunting as I thought

I’m somewhat confident I didn’t make any rule mistakes (I was especially careful I didn’t accidentally fill out the upper left slots while my granaries weren’t built yet), but I also didn’t expect to win at 73 pts either.

The giant sheets of actions used to scare me a lot whenever I would see pictures of this game, but the rulebook explained each options carefully and it felt pretty straightforward. It was really fun (and funny) puzzling out how I can convert a piece of brick into a person.

I think what really helped me not get analysis paralysis was making myself go for the first strategy that came to mind instead of shooting for that first perfect game. I told myself it’s okay to make dumb moves for the sake of learning the rules because I can always optimize them later.

I look forward to more games, and I’m excited to try out the solo campaign eventually!

Any recommendations for me based on my collection?

I like card based play a lot but I think it would be fun to try out some other stuff too. The only criteria is the game has to look graphically good. If the game looks ugly I just can't get into it. Games I have tried and sold.

Spirit Island -game looks terrible and I just didn't enjoy the feeling of always being kinda behind. Tried it multiple times, we just didn't get along.

Aeon trespass - way too big of a game, i prefer games with less focus on narrative

ISS vanguard - slog of a game, not fun at all. Spent all my time looking for tiny numbered cards

Wingspan - didn't like it much already have something like everdell that I like more

Questions about Unstoppable

Hello I saw a lot of praises for this game and I am curious what makes this game so special?

How does the game feel at its best and its worst? Is the rule book good? ( I have another game by Renegade studio and the rule book is bad and I read that the g.i. joe game also is bad)

Got to try Rolling Deep at Dice Tower East

I already backed the game but was excited to see this displayed and able to play. From what I played, I really enjoyed. Like that you have some ways of mitigating bad rolls and a pretty easy game to learn.

Board games adaptions that are better than the video game

As an avid video game player and lover of indie games I've noticed a bit of a trend with video games getting board game adaptations. Having backed and enjoyed Slay the Spire's adaptation I've found it's simplified numbers and adjusted mechanics to be more enjoyable than the video game and am curious if other board games tend to edge out or at least match the video game they are based on.

I'm also curious about games that are good adaptions but are too different to really compare. I had a lot of fun with the Cuphead Rolling Dice game and besides for a few gripes that I had especially as a solo player, I really liked how they included a lot of references and adapted mechanics from the source material. I would say it's a good adaptation, but isn't a better game, mostly because it's too different.

Some adaptations that come to mind that I'm curious about are Frostpunk and This War of Mine, as well as Elden Ring and Dead Cells although I know there are a lot out there!

Note: I'm not wondering about digital adaptions of board games like Ascension, and Gloomhaven. I've seen several posts asking about that side of the question, but I'm interested on the other side of that.

Thoughts on Wingspan Pocket for solo play?

Did anyone else catch the Wingspan Pocket gameplay video that went up the other day? It looked pretty decent for a 2-4 player game. But I dove into the rules and it seems like you'll be playing against an automated player with specific cards and such.

There's no prices point yet but I'm wondering if you guys will be picking this up to play solo or not in general. I think if it's around $20-25 I'm probably game to pre-purchase.

Their website here has more information + the rules that contain solo play explanations: https://stonemaiergames.com/games/wingspan/wingspan-pocket/

Should I leave the Final Girl I got as a gift for my friend or open it and sleeve it for them?

Hi there, I (29M) got a set of Final Girl core box, the Happy Trails Horror, the Marrek Murders and the Terror from Destiny expansions for my (28F) friends birthday, I'll be giving them to her later on this month.

I'm a huge fan of solo board gaming and wanted to gift the experience to my friend for her birthday, she's a big fan of horror and board games in general, usually goes to board game cafes with myself and others as part of a group of 4 or more.

I personally play a lot of Marvel Champions, Spirit Island and other fun games for solo play.

Because of this, I have a lot of excess sleeves and wanted to sleeve the copies of Final Girl and the expansions for my friend as she doesn't play TCGs or have access to these sleeves as easily.
Although I have no experience playing Final Girl, I have seen the action cards through unboxing videos and they look standard card size, so I was thinking of sleeving just those cards.

As solo board gamers, would you like a game given that's been opened but not played, just sleeved?

I'm happy to give her the games in the sealed packaging instead but I feel personally that it's much more fun to play games that have sleeved cards.

Thanks for any advice.
