My partner and I have a 3.5-year-old Cavalier KC Spaniel, and she’s been insured with Trupanion since we adopted her as a puppy. When choosing an insurance provider, I went with Trupanion because I was drawn to their promise never to raise your rate because of a claim or as your pet ages.

Unfortunately, that has turned out to be false in our case. Our dog had to have emergency spinal surgery a few weeks ago (it went extremely well and she’s doing great), and Trupanion processed and paid their portion of the claim. Less than two weeks later, I received an email informing me that our monthly rate would increase 25% effective immediately (from $40 to $50).

They claim this is due to the “average cost and use of veterinary care” in our area increasing, but to jump so dramatically immediately after a claim is more than just suspicious. As a customer, you’re left without recourse because they don’t have to prove the reason for the rate change—they can say anything they want.

Wanted to share for others who may be similarly drawn to their “pricing promise” — I wouldn’t recommend weighing it too heavily in your decision-making process.
