How do Norwegians generally feel about the monarchy and royal family?

Hi everyone,

This came up recently during a conversation with some Norwegian friends, and it made me curious because I’ve noticed that attitudes toward monarchy vary a lot depending on the country.

My impression is that the way people talk about their royal family says a lot about their political culture. Many of my close friends are Spanish and they are quite openly critical and skeptical of the monarchy, and some have told me that the association between the royal family and the Franco era still shapes how many people see the institution.

In the Netherlands, where my husband is from, I’ve noticed a much more casual attitude. There seems to be respect for the institution, but also a lot of jokes, criticism, and a general sense that the royals are just public figures who can be mocked/praised like anyone else.

I’m from Morocco, and the situation there feels very different. The monarchy is extremely central to national identity, and people often speak about the king with a lot of respect. But to be honest, I think part of that is also because being openly opposed to the monarchy can carry real consequences. Depending on how public or outspoken someone is, that can mean losing opportunities, problems with authorities, losing public sector jobs, or in some cases even leaving the country to avoid legal trouble. So public opinion is not always easy to read, because criticism has limits.

And so that made me wonder how it works in Norway. How do Norwegians generally view the monarchy and the royal family? Is it something people are genuinely attached to, or more of a tradition that continues because there isn’t much reason to change it?

And how do younger people feel about it? Is there affection, indifference, or growing criticism?

I’d also be curious whether recent controversies involving the royal family have changed people’s opinions in any significant way, or if most people separate the institution from the personal lives of individual members.
