Incoming junior trying to get serious about AMC 12 prep — how do I actually get good enough to place?

I’m an incoming junior, and the highest math I’ve taken so far is AP Pre-Calculus, with AP Calc BC next year, and I’ve also competed on my state’s math team. I want to start seriously studying for the AMC 12 because I want to place well and eventually win awards, but I’m not really sure what the best way to study is since AMC math feels really different from normal school math. For people who improved a lot, did you mostly grind old tests, learn theory first, or focus on certain topics, and what helped you improve accuracy and problem-solving speed the most? Any advice or resources would really help!!
