Help fixing a thetford toilet

Thetford style 2 water valve wore out. Got a replacement kit. Watched a few videos. It was a piece of work but I got there. All back together and installed. it works. But my flushing arm keeps sliding off the back post that operates the water intake (which was the part I replaced). I took the toilet off, so I worked on that flush arm pretty hard. Used a rubber mallet to bang it into place. It seems to bang into place nice and flush but it twists when I step on it. I can pop it back into place but what a pain. Hoping somebody might have some advice for me.

Edit: now wondering if this was the original problem and I didn't know enough to check for it when I dismantled it.

Bought a KJ on sale but it had this ding on the finish. It does not affect the cook at all but it bugs me and it is right on the front. Is there any way to cover this with matching paint that can take the heat? Or should I just stop thinking about it?
