Hi everyone, I’m super confused and getting different answers, so I wanted to ask here.
I’m 22, currently pregnant, and my baby will be born during the academic year December 12, 2026, under the Fall 2026 semester, my last semester. I’m in school and only work part-time. My boyfriend (the baby’s father) will be supporting most of the expenses.
A FAFSA representative basically told me to keep everything the way it is (dependent) unless I get legally married. They also said the baby’s father could claim the baby on taxes by himself until we’re married and ready to file together.
Now I’m confused about a few things:
- If I’m still considered a dependent on FAFSA, does that mean my parents have to claim me on their taxes, or is that separate?
- Can my boyfriend claim the baby on his taxes even if we’re not married and living together?
- If my parents claim me, does that affect who can claim the baby?
- Does my dependency status on FAFSA affect taxes at all, or are they completely separate?
- If I move in with my boyfriend, does anything change for FAFSA or taxes?
- Is it better (financially or for aid) for me to stay dependent until I finish school?
Also, my boyfriend is uncomfortable with my parents claiming me because he feels like it somehow involves them in our baby’s information. I’m not sure if that’s actually how it works or not.
I just want to do what’s correct and also what makes the most sense financially without messing anything up later.
If anyone has been in a similar situation or understands how FAFSA + taxes + having a baby all connect, I’d really appreciate your advice.
