I’ve been training for over 10 years, and I also help manage one of the branches of a local gym here in my country.

Over time, I kept noticing that a lot of the problems we were dealing with were not really “big tech” problems. They were everyday operational issues.

Things like:

  • Keeping member records organized
  • Knowing who is active, expired, or overdue
  • Managing staff permissions properly
  • Making reports easier to access
  • Handling classes and signups
  • Giving front desk staff, trainers, and admins the right tools without giving everyone full access
  • Connecting the software to the way the gym already operates

So I built a custom PWA for the gym, and it has now been live in production for about a month.

One of the biggest things I learned is that gym software is much more useful when it is built around the actual workflow of the gym, instead of forcing the gym to adjust everything around generic software.

For example, the gym already had an existing card-based entry system, so instead of replacing it, I built the dashboard to work with that setup. Now member access can be managed from the software, including assigning and disabling cards remotely.

It has been interesting seeing how much smoother things get when the software is designed around the real problems staff deal with every day.

Curious how other gym owners here handle this. Do you prefer using off-the-shelf gym software, or have you ever wished you had something more customized around your exact operations?
