Why are there still camp sites available in Tuolumne Meadows?

I haven’t been to Yosemite since I was a kid 30 years ago. Never camped there. I was randomly browsing rec.gov and found open availability at Tuolumne Meadows this month. I thought I got lucky and just happened to be logged on at the right time in the morning so I booked 3 nights.

Looking again, there are still many sites available this month, even on July 4th. I’ve never seen this much availability for any Yosemite campgrounds. Why?

So far all i know is that Tuolumne Meadows uses a separate entrance, is far from the valley, and might also have lots of mosquitos. Is there something else wrong that I’m missing? Most reviews say it’s their favorite place in Yosemite (or even the world), so why so much availability?
