Tuolumne Meadows Shuttle (not the Hikers bus or YARTS)

The NPS website says the TM shuttle is tentatively open July 3-Sept 13 this year. Anyone know how realistic that is? It’s been awhile, so I’m not overly hopefully

Near death on Half Dome’s Regular Northwest Face: in search of hikers who nearly killed us with rocks

On June 30th my friend and I climbed the regular northwest face of half dome. At about 6:30pm we were about 200 feet from the summit and noticed lots of rocks coming down from the top. At first we thought this was rockfall but we soon realized that these were intentionally being thrown. After yelling up to the people above they heard and acknowledged us with something unintelligible and continued to throw rocks. We had several watermelon sized rocks avoid our heads by just 2-3 feet when they tossed a block larger than my torso towards us. This rock missed us by only 2-3 feet as well. We called 911, who transferred us to a ranger, and since they had stopped throwing rocks by this point the ranger stated they would not be sending someone up the cables to investigate. If you hiked half dome on June 30th and have any possible leads please let us know.

Not all passes are bare of snow

I was not expecting THIS much snow in July! I probably should have, Red Peak Pass is the highest pass in Yosemite, but still, this was a shock. Most of it was manageable, but it was scary at the top. The grade was 30% or higher there, and I had visions of rolling down the mountain in a snowball like a cartoon.

I didn't even have any spikes. The best way down in those circumstances? Plant your boots in the boot-prints of people who came before you. This was probably the second-most technically-demanding hiking sequence I've done, as a non-climber hiker.

(First picture is the view from the top, second is looking back up from the bottom)

Donohue Pass permit questions

I have friends hiking JMT sobo from Tuolumne Meadows and I'd like to join them for their first day and night. If I get a Lyell/non-Donohue-eligible backpacking permit, how far up Donohue Pass can I go with them? Can I go right up to the park boundary?

And then when I turn around, can I go back north up the JMT and then continue around to Ireland Lake and Vogelsang, or does that violate the no-backtracking rule? Would I have to continue straight back to the Lyell trailhead and end my trip to stay legal?

Seems like it should be legal to go from the Lyell trailhead directly to Ireland Lake, Vogelsang etc, but if I add a spur hike up Donohue, that's what would break the rules?

Dogs on Tables

First, I love dogs. I raised a service dog and have two of my own at home. I loved seeing all the dogs at the park, and it definitely made me smile. BUT for the life of me I don’t understand why people put their dogs on top of tables. People eat on these tables and you’re putting your dog on top? Someone please explain this to me because I can’t help but think it’s just rude and gross.

Toloumne Meadows reservations

Why is it so hard to score a spot? Seconds after 7am 😩
What are the chances someone doesn’t show up to the reservation and we’ll be able to snag a spot once up there? We have one night, we needed two more , Saturday- checkout Monday morning ?

Bike rental with tag along child trailer in the Valley

I read that one has to line up at 7am to the bike stand in order to rent a bike with child trailer because they go fast. Is that true for a weekday in July? (Specifically next week, after this holiday weekend).

Anything I should be prepared for with renting bikes in the valley with child trailer? Thanks!

What is this?

Was walking alongside Vernal Falls when I came across this. Looks to be inflating and deflating like a lung. Was a bit more brownish than what appears in the video

Indecisive about what to do today - Mist Trail vs Tioga Road

We are already at the park, staying at the Ahwahnee. This is our 5th time in Yosemite.

We did Tioga Road once before and loved it, and I specifically wanted to return in the summer for Tenaya Lake. (We have rafts with us and I’d love to float in the lake.) But now that we are here, I’m reluctant to deal with the return traffic if we don’t have to.

We also did Mist Trail once before and loved it, and would love to see Vernal Falls again (that’s as far as we can make it with our kids). I realize it’ll be super crowded on the hike.

We will be here tomorrow too and are planning on floating down the river since it’ll be the hottest day of our stay. We rented bikes yesterday and rode to Yosemite Falls.

I’d also like to do Washburn Point and Glacier Point during this stay, but in the afternoon / late evening.

I’m feeling indecisive and would love any input. 🙃

Incident/injury on Wed 7/1?

On Wednesday evening 7/1/2026, my kids and I watched the SAR helicopter deliver a person on a stretcher to an ambulance waiting near the big meadow behind Yosemite Village. Anybody know what happened?

First time yosimite trip with kids!

My husband, kids (4, 6), and I want to plan a trip to beautiful Yosimite National Park. We are flying into Sacramento and have a 2 week timeline. We can't decide how we should travel around and stay. Should we do a rental and a lodge or a camper van? We have travelled in a camper van through the Olympic peninsula and through Mt. Rainier last year and we enjoyed it. We will be going in late April this time. How truly limited would we be if we went the camper van route again? Your personal thoughts on staying inside of the park (avoiding long lines and available parking spots is a bonus) and renting a car instead? Should we spend the full 2 weeks inside Yosimite or maybe split it up for some time to view cool spots outside of the park? I personally think the Gold Country looked really neat. We enjoy history too! Please mention some super cool kid friendly places. We are moderate hikers, kids are as well. Give us your best family friendly insiders! Thanks!!

Edit: sorry, I don't think I worded this correctly.. lol we are spending 2 days in Sacramento to adjust to time change and whatnot. And then again 2 days at the end of our trip to get back into the zone before heading home. So we will have roughly 10 days to explore. We are looking to include Yosimite into the trip, possibly staying within the park (like at the cabins or lodge, acting as a Basecamp to go back to) but want to explore outside the park within those 10 days as well. I hope this clears things up.

Why are there still camp sites available in Tuolumne Meadows?

I haven’t been to Yosemite since I was a kid 30 years ago. Never camped there. I was randomly browsing rec.gov and found open availability at Tuolumne Meadows this month. I thought I got lucky and just happened to be logged on at the right time in the morning so I booked 3 nights.

Looking again, there are still many sites available this month, even on July 4th. I’ve never seen this much availability for any Yosemite campgrounds. Why?

So far all i know is that Tuolumne Meadows uses a separate entrance, is far from the valley, and might also have lots of mosquitos. Is there something else wrong that I’m missing? Most reviews say it’s their favorite place in Yosemite (or even the world), so why so much availability?
