Hi! I'll be hiking clouds rest for this first time this weekend. What are good tips/things to know/ food etc? Like start time even for the hike
I am 23F and in pretty good shape- currently training for a half marathon and love hiking
I lost a yellow La Sportiva Katana lace climbing shoe while coming back from climbing swan slab gully (camp 4/lower falls area). On the off chance one of you happens to find it, please let me know and I’ll be forever grateful. Would also pay to have it mailed to me if it’s found after we leave.
we just found parking at the lodge and were walking to The Village, probably around 7:30.
as we followed the path along the road, we saw a small cluster of people gathered and looking towards the tall tree in the photo.
I then quickly saw their point of interest: a large momma brown bear walking through the tall grass.
i’ve never seen a bear in person. it brought out an involuntary gasp, and froze me to the ground. it was such a strikingly beautiful moment.
then, the bear began looking up at the tall tree, and we heard some strange sounds, almost like a cry for help.
Some stick and leaves rained down. The mom sat back on its hind legs and looked up.
High in the tree, almost near its peak, were two cubs, one of which was hanging from a swaying, thin branch that bounced as he moved.
the scene became a bit tense then, as we feared the branch would snap and we’d see this baby bear fall 15+ feet.
before i could look back down, the momma bear scaled its way up the tree, and walked out on that same flimsy branch. i marveled at an animal with so much mass being able to climb with so much ease.

we stayed for another five minutes to see if the mom would help lower the cubs, but did not want to see a possible accident, so we left. i’m assuming it all went well.
it was an unforgettable first impression of the park.
Not sure if news has traveled, but a dead tree fell on the path less than 10 feet away from us near the entrance/exit of the Grizzly Giant trail yesterday in Mariposa Grove. Was around late afternoon and we got about a 3 second warning before it snapped and fell.
Luckily, nobody was injured as the trail wasn’t overly packed and no one had headphones in. Can’t imagine how many more people would have been at risk during Memorial Day weekend.
Picture attached. Not sure if the rangers have cleared the area yet.
Always stay alert out there!
Hey...
short notice, but if anyone is looking for 1 - 3 nights to camp, I might cancel my campsite reservation later tonight...maybe between 6 - 8 pm.
Thing have come up personally, and I probably can't go to Yosemite anymore, and a friend was interested in going instead, but now he might not, so I'd rather another Redditor be able to use the campsite.
Last year, someone else on here got it, so maybe it'll work again this time.
It's at my favorite campground in the Valley, Lower Pines, from Friday, May 22 until Monday, May 25.
Max 6 people and 2 parking spaces.
Others use bots/scripts to notify them when a campsite becomes available on Recreation.gov -- so I can't promise it'll be available to you...but I'll check back later today, and if anyone is interested, we can coordinate a time between 6 pm - 8 pm.
FYI - last year, a few Redditors were interested, so if it happens again that multiple people want it, I'm sorry, but I have no control over who ultimately books it once it's canceled & released back onto Recreation.gov
Cheers.
Update:
Hi all.
I'm sincerely sorry. My friend just messaged me and said he can go, so it's now his campsite reservation.
This honestly was not my intention to get anyone's hopes up.
I told him about this reddit post, and will check with him if he's willing to share the campsite with any of you.
Drove 4 hours Friday night chasing clear skies for Milky Way photography, and Yosemite absolutely delivered. Captured the Milky Way rising over Tunnel View, then drove another hour up to Glacier Point to shoot the full arch before sunrise. Totally worth the sleep deprivation.
Here are some of my edited shots from the night — hope you all enjoy them!
Gear Sony a1 and 14 mm f 1.8
My friends are backpacking and hiking all over the park and have permits for Half Dome on June 7. I've been invited to join but due to work obligations I'd have to leave the North Bay around 1pm on Saturday. I'd realistically make it down in 4-5 hours (I think) hopefully arriving no later than 6pm. My friends proposed I make my way to Happy Isles trailhead and meet them in Little Yosemite Valley.
This part seems very doable, but I am not sure how to handle the the parking situation. Especially considering how busy things have been, I am concerned that I will drive down and have nowhere to park/leave my car. Any suggestions?
Literally right next to the trail! Would not have noticed him if there weren’t people taking pictures. (Yes I know I am too close, I hugged the wall as I passed him to keep as much space as possible)
Picked this SD card up on the ground at camp 4 last week, do you know these people? Can you help me get this back to them safely? Lots of nice photos, sorry I looked!!
Just got back from Yosemite staying at Curry Village for the first time and honestly wish someone told me half of this before we went lol.
Context: Couple trip from NorCal (May 15–18), traveling on a budget.
Parking: Parking stress is VERY real. Originally we planned to arrive around midday, but after reading online warnings we changed plans and got there around 4–5PM instead. Luckily we found parking near our tent.
In the morning we got a text update saying parking was already full by 9AM. If you’re visiting on weekends, definitely plan ahead.
Looking back, I honestly think arriving later in the afternoon saved us a ton of stress.
Tent tips: We got lucky with a tent near both the restroom and parking, and honestly that made a huge difference. Also, the bear rules are stricter than I expected.
Not just food. ANYTHING scented goes into the bear locker:
shampoo, toothpaste, sanitizer, snacks, etc. Don’t leave stuff in your car overnight either.
Bathroom situation: The showers/restrooms are shared, but if you need to brush your teeth or do skincare/get ready, use the bathroom sinks instead of the restroom sinks. Much cleaner, especially in the mornings. They clean the facilities twice a day around 2–3PM and 8–9PM. Pro tip: shower right after the evening cleaning window.
Stuff I'm glad I brought
Food situation
Breakfast:
One of the best decision we packed was quick breakfast stuff: instant noodles, instant coffee, bread + peanut butter, and hard-boiled eggs.
You can get free hot water at the grocery store and dining pavilion, which made everything super convenient.
Honestly, food prices in Yosemite were more reasonable than we expected for a touristy place, but bringing our own breakfast saved both money and time waiting in long lines.
Pizza Deck: Pizza is actually really good, but the wait during peak hours is brutal.
We waited ~30 mins just to order, then got told the pizza itself would take another hour. A lot of large groups order multiple pizzas, and the place just doesn’t seem built for weekend crowds. Finding seats was rough too. Still worth trying, but definitely plan around the wait time and maybe do something else while waiting for your food. We went on Sat, but honestly Monday looked WAY more manageable.
Mexican grill place: Forgot the name, but it’s the Mexican spot near the pavilion. Fish tacos > Burrito > Regular Taco. Still expect a 30–40 min wait around meal times.
Seven Tents Pavilion + Bar 1899: Honestly underrated.
Seven Tents is basic cafeteria-style food, but: almost no wait + cozy indoor seating
We got rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, and clam chowder. They also had fruit, salad, milk, kid portions, etc. Solid backup option when every other line is insane.
Bar 1899 looked surprisingly good too. Didn’t try it ourselves, but the burgers and fries people were getting looked massive.
Sunset: Best sunset is probably Glacier Point, but driving up and down is a whole mission (better to top up your gas tank before getting into the village). Tunnel View is another alternative
Overall:
Still 100% worth the trip, but Yosemite on weekends honestly feels like survival mode unless you plan everything ahead 😂
Good luck to everyone going Memorial Day weekend.
Anything else first-timers should know before staying at Curry Village?
I’m looking to go this weekend and hike from Four Mile trail to Glacier Point and Panorama View to end at the Mist Trail
I want to start from a tuolomne meadows trailhead on Thursday but it says every single permit in the entire park is booked through Friday.
I can’t believe this. Are they actually all taken? Or are they just not releasing them online until Saturday of Memorial Day and it’s still self registration?
Edit: this is for an overnight trip btw
Hello there, I'm planning a road trip from LA to SF in August and my girlfriend would like to check out Yosemite while we are up there. If I left early enough (not a problem I wakeup early for work) would hitting Yosemite and leaving for SF in the same day be reasonable?
I've done long road trips plenty of times, up to even 12 hours in 1 shot just stopping for gas. I'm just not sure how much time I should expect to spend in Yosemite. I was thinking maybe arrive around 11, have lunch, explore for 4 hours then leave for SF, is that short itinerary reasonable?
