Alonso and Seaver
Both left the Mets because of money. Both thought they were worth more than the Mets wanted to pay... and imho they were BOTH worth getting paid, but it ain't my money.
Those of us that are of a certain age are STILL mad that the Mets let Tom Seaver go, and we post about it frequently. So, I can't be upset about fans posting about Alonso... he's this generation's Seaver "trade."
Seaver wasn't traded out the blue (and orange), he demanded to be traded. Free agency was just being born and players were making a lot more money than the best pitcher in the game. He wanted to renegotiate his contract. That caused a long feud and then Dick Young <spit> wrote an unflattering article about Seaver's wife that he believed was planted by the Mets. Seaver had enough and wanted out, so the Mets sent him to Cincinnati. He was replaced in the rotation by Pat Zachary!
Alonso also wanted more than the Mets wanted to pay, so he left and was replaced by Polanco!
In Mets history David Stearns will probably go down as the second coming of M. Donald Grant.
I'm not saying that Alonso is as great as Seaver, but you can't deny that he is great and was the heart of the team. This generation lost its Tom Seaver, and 50 years from now this generation will still be as pissed as I am about losing my guy in 1977. We need to get used to fans posting about Alonso with longing, bitterness, and anger.
