It took me a few attempts to realize this. I kept trying to storm the trenches only to get lit up at every intersection. You want to stay out of the trenches and go from tree to tree for cover. This way you can engage enemies outside of the trenches and also makes for easier headshots on enemies occupying the trenches. The AI is pretty aggressive right now so let them come to you. I tried it this way and had minimal issues.
