justhost.ru response to an unreachable VPS: relocate it and lose your data

My VPS in Geneva suddenly went offline and became completely unreachable.

I contacted support and got an automatic reply saying everything was fine and that they would respond within 48 hours.

Then I talked to their bot. The bot confirmed that my server was indeed unavailable, but said they had not detected any global problems in that location. The suggested solution was basically: move your server to another location.

I asked what would happen to my data.

"Your data will be deleted."

I pointed out that this was their server and asked if someone could at least check it manually. The answer was yes, and they created a support ticket. I assume it's the same ticket that's supposed to be answered within 48 hours.

In the end, I migrated everything to another hosting provider that I was already using. Fortunately, the server was completely stateless and didn't store anything valuable. I just redeployed my microservices elsewhere and was back online.

What really amazed me was the logic: "We don't see a global issue, so as far as we're concerned, good luck."

Hopefully this experience is useful to someone when choosing a VPS provider.
