Need honest POV from beagle owners
Hello! I’m currently fostering a 10-week old beagle- mix puppy with the option to adopt. I recently owned an 11-year-old golden retriever who was the love of my life, but am excited about the possibility of bringing a new pup into the fold.
All that to say… there are plenty of differences between a senior golden and a beagle puppy!
Before we commit to this dog fully, I wanted to get some perspective from experienced dog owners to make sure we are the best fit and can give this dog the right lifestyle.
She’s incredibly intelligent, spunky and cuddly, but I’m wondering:
- can beagles realistically spend time home alone, without their humans? Our pup whimpers and cries anytime we leave the house, even with crate training, and so just trying to understand if this is something that can be overcome or if it’s a baseline beagle trait? I guess just looking for reassurance that this puppy separation panic is a phase. We lead an active life and try to involve our dog often, but of course that isn’t always possible
- is it possible to manage “demand barking”? I’m not talking about playful howls etc.
- how do beagles do in the car? Are they okay on a road trip?
Pics of our sweet girl for your enjoyment! Waiting on her DNA results which will shed further light on temperament - her mom is full beagle, her dad is a total mystery!
