Right size RCBO for an EV charger
So, I had a sparky here installing a 5 pin industrial outlet for my single phase 32amp Tesla mobile EV charger. Yes, I told them that's what I would plug into that power point.
They ran a 6mm² cable and added a new 32amp RCBO for this circuit. To my untrained eyes I'd say that's good enough.
I haven't got my EV yet so I could not test it.
To my surprise the folks selling the 32amp tail for the charger have a sticker on the box saying:
Circuit Breaker Information
A sensitive 32A breaker may trip at full load, which is normal and not a fault.
Under AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, a 32A EV charging circuit should be protected by a 40A breaker, as EV charging is classified as a continuous load. This also helps avoid frequent nuisance tripping.
I asked the sparky and shared the above with them. They said it should be fine as it is and that a 40amp breaker won't protect the outlet.
What do you say?
