Bunny distribution got me

Before I even start, yes the sweet bean is currently in my downstairs guest bathroom because I didn’t and still don’t know what to do.

I live in a typical suburban neighborhood and yesterday, while taking my trash to my trash can, I find this guy hiding in a very small patch of shade behind my trash.

I don’t know a lot about bunnies but I know I live in Texas where when the sun is blazing, it can be dangerous for fluffy little creatures not built for the heat. I immediately picked him up (very little resistance which honestly scared me) and brought him inside. I do have dogs so for everyone’s comfort, I put him inside my guest bathroom on the cold tile and brought him water.

He was super lethargic for a while but seems to be doing great as of last night and this morning. My questions for you guys are- what is the likelihood of someone’s rabbit escaping? I told my 9-year old to not get attached (which is hard because the bun is a sweetie) in case signs go up or someone comes knocking asking if we’ve seen a bunny. Or is it more likely that he was dumped? I’ve read a lot of posts on here and already purchased Oxbow Garden Select and a huge bag of Timothy Hay. I’d like to take the bunny to the vet but should I wait a few days to make sure the owners don’t come looking? Are bunnies microchipped like dogs are? Moving forward I would just love a little advice. Thanks in advance!
