Needs external opinion
Hi,
(I saw the pinned post, so I feel like this type of post might not be very appreciated here, but I don't have many friends to talk about this with and I'd still like to hear some external opinions.)
I (24M) live in France. About two years ago, I started noticing that my chin and lower jaw were slightly shifted to the left. After some scans, I was diagnosed with condylar hyperplasia: my right condyle is longer than the left one, which pushes my jaw to the left. What feels strange is that I never had this issue before. When I look at older photos of myself, I don't see any asymmetry. It seems like it gradually appeared over the last two years.
The good news is that I can live normally. I can eat, breathe, and function without major problems. The main issues are speech and aesthetics. Regarding speech, I can obviously talk, but I often feel like pronouncing words correctly requires WAY more effort than it should. People regularly ask me to repeat myself, and over time I've gotten used to speaking less because of it.
The second issue is the aesthetic aspect. Most people tell me they don't notice that my chin is shifted to the left. However, professionals can clearly see it, and I notice it immediately in photos. To be honest, it has had a significant impact on my self-confidence. I'm not looking for a perfect face, but I struggle with seeing the asymmetry every time I look at pictures of myself.
I've recently started treatment with an orthodontist and consulted a jaw surgeon. According to him, I will most likely need double jaw surgery (bimax): advancing the upper jaw because my lower jaw sits too far forward, while also correcting the lower jaw alignment and asymmetry. On paper, it sounds like the right solution. However, I'm still very anxious about it and I'm not completely sure whether I should go through with the surgery. Since I can already eat and breathe normally, I sometimes wonder if the risks and recovery are worth it. Reading about the postoperative period, potential complications, and the long recovery process makes me hesitate.
The financial aspect is another concern. In France, the surgery is only partially covered. I would still have around €3,500 to pay for the operation itself, plus €150 per month for orthodontic treatment over 24 months. That's a significant amount of money, especially when I'm not 100% convinced that surgery is the right choice.
Has anyone here been in a similar situation? Looking back, was it worth it?
