New or used trail Bike

Me and my son are getting into mountain biking. Well...he's been dragging me along to trails. We have a hard tail each, mine is just some old Cannondale I have had for ages and I brought his second hand from a bike park. Three/four months later after a few sessions things keep going wrong with his and what seemed like a decent bike for the money now is starting to look like a money pit. Should I hold out with the hard tails and just put money into it or should I just do the inevitable and purchase a couple of decent new full suspension bikes and hopefully save myself a load of hassle in the long run.

I also read different things about hard tails and full suspension, I.e learn on a hard tail is great and you'll be the better biker! Or most accidents happen on hard tails! I also noticed on a couple of bike parks they only hire full suspension.

Thanks
